WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A USED RV

If you’re looking to purchase an RV, there are many factors to consider. Brand-new RVs are a big investment but a used one comes with its own problems. Here are a few things to look for in a used RV.

Learn the history of the RV. Is the current owner the only one or have there been multiple owners? Have there been any major repairs or upgrades? Have any been recommended? Check the mileage and ask about the types of trips the owner has taken. Has the RV mostly been used for quick weekend trips or has it been extensively lived out of? The outside might look fantastic but be hiding issues you don’t want to deal with. Knowing the state of the RV is key to making your decision.

Ask the current owner if you can give it a test drive. If they won’t allow for that, it’s a big red flag. You’ll want to test it at various speeds. Does it handle well? Accelerate timely? This is also a good time to check out all the buttons. Turn them on one at a time to make sure everything works. A repair isn’t necessarily a deal breaker but consider if it’s worth it financially. If anything feels off, go with your gut and walk away.

Something you might not have thought of is to stand in the shower. It might sound strange, but you’ll be using it often. If the shower is cramped or not designed well, it will result in a bad experience every time you use it. Your comfort should factor heavily in your purchase. After all, you’ll be using it for years to come.

Use these tips to make sure you get the best deal you can get!

PROPER STORAGE OF FURNITURE

At Big Item Storage, our units aren’t just for your big vehicles. Whether you are moving to a new place or need to temporarily store your household items, our storage units are perfect for furniture. For both short- and long-term use, your items are safe with us! Here are a few tips to help make storing your furniture painless.

A good thing to do prior to storing furniture is to disassemble anything that can be taken apart. It’s much easier to store your things with everything broken down into small components. You can place all the loose screws and other hardware in baggies labeled for their appropriate item. You should also cover up your items with loose cloth or blankets. Don’t wrap it completely in plastic, as that can trap moisture and ruin your items.

You should also thoroughly clean all your items before storing them. This prevents nasty smells, mold, and the like. It also protects your items so they can come out of storage looking just as great as they did when they went in.

One last thing is to avoid overstuffing the unit. Organize your unit to the smallest detail to ensure nothing gets broken from bad placement. You’ll also want to make sure you leave a small amount of room in between items to allow for air to circulate throughout the unit. These gaps in between items also allow for easier storage access. If the unit is near full, stop and check the efficiency of your organization. Know when to stop and consider more storage options.

TIPS FOR PREPPING YOUR BOAT FOR STORAGE

There are many reasons why you might find yourself in need of a storage facility for your boat. Maybe you have deed restrictions on your property or are temporarily relocating. Whatever the reason, at Big Item Storage, we know you want your boat to be in the same shape when you remove it from storage as it was when you put it there. Our units are perfect for keeping your boat protected on the outside, but taking a few precautions can help protect it inside as well.

Removing the battery is standard for many different vehicles, and your boat is no exception. But new boat owners might not realize that you also need to remove the bilge drain plug to get rid of excess water from your boat. The gas tank is another component that needs some extra care. Make sure to completely fill the tank and add a gas stabilizer. Afterwards, run the engine for about 15 minutes.

If there is any damage to the hull from sun, water, or other causes, you should have that repaired before storing your boat. Left unattended, these problems can worsen while your boat is unattended. You should also check to make sure your trailer is in good condition. Replace any corroded pieces and ensure that the lights function properly. Finally, it’s a good idea to go ahead and restock supplies, from first aid items to life vests so you won’t be caught unprepared when you remove your boat for use. Just make sure that these items are stored in completely dry areas.

KEEPING YOUR BOAT IN GOOD SHAPE

Fishing season is here, and it’s the perfect time to get your boat out for some fun on the water. Big Item Storage wants you to have a great time out there, so here are a few tips to help your boat stay in great shape this season.

Before even getting your boat out on the water, make it a habit to check your engine and propeller. Even if you are confident of their condition, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Check for leakage, dents in the metal, and to ensure everything runs smoothly. Also, keep your boat topped up on fuel. This will prevent moisture from getting into your tank. If anything looks off, take it into a certified shop to get checked out. It only takes one missed detail to lead to a problem

When you are out on the water, you should do your best to keep your boat dry. Moisture of any kind can become an issue if left to its own devices. Some of the risks are corroded metal and mildew growth. These problems can be a mere hassle, but they can easily turn into something expensive. Keep a few towels on your boat for the sole purpose of wiping up any stray water that gets onto your boat. If you do spot corrosion, make sure to tackle it immediately.

These few small things can keep your boat going for years to come!

PROPERLY STORING YOUR ATV

Big Item Storage’s units hold all kinds of large items. They’re a great place to store vehicles of all kinds when you’re not using them, including ATVs. Keeping your ATVs in good shape is key, especially when storing long term. Here are a few helpful tips to make sure your ATV retains its value while being stored.

First, keep it clean! Any dirt, even small bits, can cause rust when introduced to moisture. Thoroughly clean your ATV from top to bottom to keep this from happening. You’ll also want to drain the fuel tank and run the engine to burn off any remaining fuel. At the very least, you should turn the fuel valve off and add gasoline stabilizer to fresh gas. Do not add the stabilizer to old gas.

Even when not in use, batteries will drain energy. So it’s a good idea to remove the battery all together and store it separately. You’ll have to charge the battery about once every month to keep it maintained.

Despite the secure storage we provide, sometimes moisture and vermin will still find their way in. To keep your ATV protected, secure plastic bags over your mufflers. You don’t want any nasty surprises when you get your ATV back from storage.

PREPPING YOUR MOTORCYCLE FOR LONG-TERM STORAGE

At Big Item Storage, our units can be used for much more than RVs and boats. Motorcycles are many people’s pride and joy, but there may come a time when you’ll have to store it. After making such a large investment, you’ll want to keep it safe and sound. Here are a few tips to keep your bike in top shape until you get riding again.

One thing many might not think about is the battery. It is an extremely important piece of the bike that can cause damage if left unattended. If your battery has screw-on type caps, go ahead and check the battery fluid level. Insufficient battery acid can cause a short between the plates. This is a pretty common failure that generally leads to the need for a replacement battery. Even maintenance-free batteries need to be monitored.

Another thing to monitor is the tires. Tires can lose air while in storage. If they become soft or flat tire, the weight of the bike can cause a permanent flat spot. It can also damage the rims. Using the bike’s center stand or paddock stand can help with this. If that isn’t an option for you, you can slightly over-inflate the tires. Make sure to move the bike from time to time so the tires aren’t always in the same position. These tips will help keep your bike in great shape for your next ride!

PREPPING YOUR RV FOR STORAGE

RVs are a huge investment, so taking precautions before storing them can help you make your investment last. At Big Item Storage, we take pride in the large RV storage units that we offer. Here are a few tips to make sure the process of storing your RV is a breeze.

As much as our storage units protect your RV, they cannot protect from uninvited visitors in the form of insects and vermin. But there are a few things you can do to ensure that these critters can’t invade your RV. Make sure to close all windows and vents and seal any gaps or holes with silicon or expanding foam. Remove all food from the RV, even if it’s non-perishable. Cleaning and vacuuming your RV from top to bottom ensures that no crumbs will be left behind to entice critters. You’ll also want to do a thorough clean of your fridge before shutting down for storage.

For longer storage times, you’ll want to disconnect your battery and propane supply. Even though appliances are turned off, they still use a low level of energy. Simply disconnect the wires to the power supply to provide a longer battery life. Removing the propane supply means you won’t have to worry about damage to the tank or a leak.

STORING LARGE ITEMS WITH EASE

No matter your reason for needing to store large items like appliances or furniture, moving them isn’t fun. But you can make things a lot easier on yourself by storing your items at Big Item Storage. Our large storage units may have been designed for boats or RVs, but they’re the perfect spot for bulky household items too. Our drive-up units let you unload with ease. We can’t help you load your items, but here are a few tips to make your do-it-yourself move easier as well.

Instead of straining your back to lift furniture, make sure you buy or rent appropriate moving tools. With boxes, load a few on a hand truck and save yourself some trips to the moving van. Furniture straps and flat dollies will help get heavier items out of the way but be careful with the straps. You won’t want to use them coming up and down the stairs because they overload the person at the bottom.

You’ll want to make sure your items don’t bump up against each other in transit. Moving blankets can be rented for a short period or purchased if your items will be in storage for more than a few days. Wrap hard surfaces with the blankets to protect both that piece and others from damage. Then use plastic film or wrapping tape to secure the blankets in place. Wrapping prior to taking items out of your house will also protect your doorways and walls from damage. With heirloom pieces, antiques, and more delicate items like mirrors, you may want to go a step further and wrap them with bubble wrap prior to the blankets for added protection.

GIVE YOUR BOAT A REST AND HEAD TO THE PIER INSTEAD

Sometimes the itch to fish strikes, but you don’t have time for a day on the water. No problem! Leave your boat in the safety of Big Item’s storage unit and head to one of the area’s fishing piers instead. Whether you have an hour or a full day, pier fishing is a great way to enjoy your favorite sport.

Bob Hall Pier can take you way out into the Gulf’s waters. This 1,240-foot elevated pier is a joy to fish from. The pier is open from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. However, on Friday and Saturday it stays lit-up and open 24 hours for all you night fishers.

The Red Dot Pier on the Humble Channel is another local favorite. It stays well-lit at night also, with extended hours until 2:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Regular hours are from 6:00 a.m. to midnight daily.

You’ll need a $2.00 Pier Pass to access either location. Forget anything? Both piers have a shop to rent gear or purchase bait or snacks. For more information on pier fishing in Corpus Christi, stop by the Visitor Information Center at 1590 N. Shoreline Blvd. daily between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. or visit their website here. You can learn more about required licenses and obtain them here.

PREPARING YOUR FISHING GEAR FOR STORAGE

If you’re fishing all year, you might not think too much about the best way to store your gear. However, even the most avid anglers don’t fish every day. So keeping your equipment clean and protected is a must.

Fishing rods require a little TLC to maintain. Watch for loose or exposed wraps so you can replace them. You’ll also want to replace any grooved or worn guides. Extreme temperatures can cause the rods to bend. Storing them horizontally can do the same.

The reels are often neglected when cleaning fishing equipment. The best method for caring for them is to completely disassemble them. Clean all of the parts thoroughly, including handles and all hardware. Don’t forget to replace worn or old parts and lubricate everything well before reassembling.

While your rods and reels are your most important equipment, you shouldn’t neglect your accessories either. Lures, hooks, and tackle should be inspected, cleaned, and dried well before storing. Same with any tools you use. Don’t forget to sharpen dull hooks and filet knives. Lastly, inspect your waders and boots for leaks and wear. A flashlight can help you locate tiny holes that might not be visible.

A little time spent before you store your gear makes all the difference.
