KEEPING HUMIDITY AT BAY

Whether you’re using a small storage unit for a few household items or a larger one such as those at Big Item Storage, humidity is always a concern. The hot, humid Coastal Bend summers mean that precautions should be taken to minimize humidity in your unit. This will ensure that your items stay in great shape for a long time.

Avoiding items that can be easily affected by heat and humidity is obviously the first step. Remove things like sensitive electronics, paintings, and photographs from boxes and even from your RV or boat. Books, papers, and the like can handle the humidity short-term, even though they will absorb moisture, as long as its not excessive and there’s decent ventilation. Fabric-covered items require some care to keep mildew from forming.

There are many products that are designed to absorb moisture. Placing these in your unit will help tremendously. Containers of Damp-Rid or similar moisture-absorbing products can be placed in various spots in the unit. Make sure to monitor and change them out frequently. Inside boxes, you can place packets of silica. Make sure to order larger-size packets to make it easier to monitor and replace them.

Check with your local hardware store for some suggestions and do some research based on your specific storage needs. Protecting the value of your items is worth some extra digging.

KEEPING YOUR BOAT CLEAN AND PROTECTED

Your boat is a big investment, so keeping it clean and maintained is key. Storing it at Big Item Storage lets you access our washing stations to make the job much easier. Here are a few more tips to keep your boat in the best shape possible.

After a day out on the water, you’ll want to give your boat a top to bottom rinse. A good rinse will loosen any grime and make it easier to wash. This is especially important if you can’t fully wash the boat right away.

Choosing a boat-specific cleanser is your best bet. Harsh cleansing agents in other products can damage the finish. It’s important to attack the job in sections, otherwise soap will dry on the surface. Use a cloth or gentle sponge with a lot of lather to tackle a defined section. Then rinse that area before moving to the next section.

After drying your boat, you’ll want to apply a coat of wax. The wax creates a barrier that will make your next cleaning even easier. Purchase a boat-specific wax and apply in small sections, buffing it with a cloth as you go. With a little TLC, your boat will stay protected and looking great!

NEED TEMPORARY STORAGE? CHECK US OUT!

So many people we talk to need temporary storage for their household items. Big Item Storage might not be the first place you think of, but it’s a great place to store the contents of your home! Regular storage units and pods aren’t your best option for temporary storage. The multiple units you need increase the cost substantially. Our units have wide openings that allow you to drive in to unload. The ceiling is high enough to accommodate RVs and boats, so it can handle even the tallest furniture. No need to break down your furniture here- there’s plenty of room for it all! You can even line up shelves to store your boxes on for easy access later.

Why not give us a call and see how we can make your temporary situation much easier and brighter?
