KEEPING HUMIDITY AT BAY

Whether you’re using a small storage unit for a few household items or a larger one such as those at Big Item Storage, humidity is always a concern. The hot, humid Coastal Bend summers mean that precautions should be taken to minimize humidity in your unit. This will ensure that your items stay in great shape for a long time.

Avoiding items that can be easily affected by heat and humidity is obviously the first step. Remove things like sensitive electronics, paintings, and photographs from boxes and even from your RV or boat. Books, papers, and the like can handle the humidity short-term, even though they will absorb moisture, as long as its not excessive and there’s decent ventilation. Fabric-covered items require some care to keep mildew from forming.

There are many products that are designed to absorb moisture. Placing these in your unit will help tremendously. Containers of Damp-Rid or similar moisture-absorbing products can be placed in various spots in the unit. Make sure to monitor and change them out frequently. Inside boxes, you can place packets of silica. Make sure to order larger-size packets to make it easier to monitor and replace them.

Check with your local hardware store for some suggestions and do some research based on your specific storage needs. Protecting the value of your items is worth some extra digging.
