BRING OUT YOUR COMPETITIVE SIDE

The Coastal Bend provides year-round opportunities to fish. As part of that, the area holds a lot of tournaments throughout the year. This lets anglers of all ages and experience levels challenge themselves.

Participating in a tournament is a great way to shake up your fishing routine! The more you fish, the better you get at it, and tournaments are a fun way to measure your improvement. With multiple divisions to choose from, you’ll have appropriate competition for your level. You can even compete as a team or as a family in many tournaments.

Weekend tournaments are a great challenge and bring fun prizes for placing in your division. They also tend to have a festival atmosphere, letting even non-anglers enjoy the event. But you’ll also find seasonal tournaments in the Coastal Bend. These tournaments are composed of multiple events, with results tallied over time. They’re a great way to track your progress and get to know other anglers who share your experience level.

GIVE YOUR BOAT A REST AND HEAD TO THE PIER INSTEAD

Sometimes the itch to fish strikes, but you don’t have time for a day on the water. No problem! Leave your boat in the safety of Big Item’s storage unit and head to one of the area’s fishing piers instead. Whether you have an hour or a full day, pier fishing is a great way to enjoy your favorite sport.

Bob Hall Pier can take you way out into the Gulf’s waters. This 1,240-foot elevated pier is a joy to fish from. The pier is open from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. However, on Friday and Saturday it stays lit-up and open 24 hours for all you night fishers.

The Red Dot Pier on the Humble Channel is another local favorite. It stays well-lit at night also, with extended hours until 2:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Regular hours are from 6:00 a.m. to midnight daily.

You’ll need a $2.00 Pier Pass to access either location. Forget anything? Both piers have a shop to rent gear or purchase bait or snacks. For more information on pier fishing in Corpus Christi, stop by the Visitor Information Center at 1590 N. Shoreline Blvd. daily between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. or visit their website here. You can learn more about required licenses and obtain them here.

PREPARING YOUR FISHING GEAR FOR STORAGE

If you’re fishing all year, you might not think too much about the best way to store your gear. However, even the most avid anglers don’t fish every day. So keeping your equipment clean and protected is a must.

Fishing rods require a little TLC to maintain. Watch for loose or exposed wraps so you can replace them. You’ll also want to replace any grooved or worn guides. Extreme temperatures can cause the rods to bend. Storing them horizontally can do the same.

The reels are often neglected when cleaning fishing equipment. The best method for caring for them is to completely disassemble them. Clean all of the parts thoroughly, including handles and all hardware. Don’t forget to replace worn or old parts and lubricate everything well before reassembling.

While your rods and reels are your most important equipment, you shouldn’t neglect your accessories either. Lures, hooks, and tackle should be inspected, cleaned, and dried well before storing. Same with any tools you use. Don’t forget to sharpen dull hooks and filet knives. Lastly, inspect your waders and boots for leaks and wear. A flashlight can help you locate tiny holes that might not be visible.

A little time spent before you store your gear makes all the difference.

NOT YOUR AVERAGE DAY ON THE WATER

During the warmer months, boat owners can’t wait to get out on the water. However, during the cooler months, their boats sit in storage. You’ve made a large investment in your boat, so why not get more use out of it?

With the Coastal Bend’s mild winters, fishing is a year-round activity. One way to make it even more enticing is participating in tournaments. You’ll meet fellow anglers and increase your skills. You’ll also enjoy using your boat for a different experience than you’re used to.

Of course winning a prize is great, but tournaments are more about the challenge, improving your skills, and being around like-minded people. You’ll find tournaments for every age and skill level. Some are single day or weekend events, but others are progressive and tally up the catches from several weeks or months. There are also team events where multiple people participate from one boat or multiple boats count as a team. You’ll be happy to get more use out of your boat and may even find that tournaments become a regular part of your boating life.

GETTING READY FOR OYSTER SEASON

November 1st brings the start of oyster season on the Texas Gulf Coast. If you’re planning on taking your boat out to harvest some this season, there are some things you’ll need to know.

A valid fishing license with saltwater endorsement is required. You can harvest for your own consumption, but if you only hold a recreational license, you cannot sell the oysters. You can harvest by hand, using tongs or using an oyster dredge of no more than 14 inches in width. However, if you elect to use tongs or a dredge, you’ll need to purchase a Sport Oyster Boat commercial fishing license. There are size and volume requirements to consider as well.

There are many areas that are off-limits for oyster harvesting, so make sure to check out the maps on the Texas Department of State Health services website here. You’ll also want to pay close attention to avoid marked private lease areas. Once you have your haul, don’t forget to wash down your boat before storing it. Big Item Storage’s customers can do so conveniently at our washing station.

Oyster season along the Texas Gulf Coast runs Monday through Friday from November 1st through April 30th and from sunrise to 3:30 p.m. For more information on oyster harvesting and to state check regulations and requirements, visit the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission here.

PACKING UP YOUR FISHING GEAR

Fishing is a year-round sport in the Coastal Bend, but not all anglers can fish year-round. No matter how active you are, there are times of year you’ll have to store your fishing gear. If you’re already storing your boat at Big Item Storage, your unit is a great way to save space at home when the equipment isn’t in regular use. Here are a few tips to help you protect your equipment until the next fishing trip.

A step many forget is properly caring for the reels. You’ll want to disassemble them to clean and lubricate them, as well as replacing any old parts. Make sure to also clean the handles and hardware before reassembling everything.

Your rods require the same level of care. Make sure to check the guides and replace any that are worn or grooved. Loose or exposed wraps should also be repaired. You’ll want to store your rods vertically. This will keep them from bending. Keep an eye on the temperature in summer, however. High heat can affect graphite and fiberglass.

Inspect your waders for leaks and wear. You can use a flashlight inside them to locate even the tiniest holes. Make sure to patch them with waterproof adhesive. Lures, hooks, tools, and tackle should all be inspected as well. Replace or clean these items and dry them well before storing. You’ll also want to sharpen dull hooks, tools, and filet knives.

A little preparation goes a long way to keeping your equipment functioning for years to come.
